Emergency Service Ute Fitout | Auckland Emergency Management Case Study
Posted on 23 June 2026 by Utemaster
Auckland Emergency Management coordinate New Zealand Response Teams across South, West, and North Auckland. These are highly skilled, trained volunteers who step forward when communities come under pressure, responding to severe weather events, search and rescue callouts, and welfare situations where people are displaced or cut off.
When they arrive on scene, there is no time to work out where something is.
It's a great example of what Utemaster can do for emergency service organisations across New Zealand and Australia.
A Gap in the Fleet
Alexis Reed is the Fleet and Volunteer Manager at Auckland Emergency Management. Logan is a team leader for New Zealand Response Team 3, based in West Auckland. Both of them saw the same problem unfolding across the fleet.
"We saw a big gap with our fleet where they just weren't fit for purpose," says Alexis.
The teams had always run utes, but with standard fibreglass canopies on the back. The small windows, sliding doors, and limited access meant that reaching gear stored at the far end of the tray was slow and cumbersome. During one training exercise, a team came across a real incident on the road. The critical gear they needed was at the very back of the ute. To reach it, they had to pull everything else out first.
That moment made the decision clear.
Built Around What the Teams Needed
Alexis led a full fleet review, listening closely to what the response teams were asking for. The brief was straightforward: operationally ready, consistently set up, and built for the conditions these teams work in.
"We need to have that operationally fleet-ready to respond," says Alexis. "Especially our response teams, who need to be critically ready in a timely manner in order to respond to the community."
Utemaster was the answer. The full Utemaster TrailCore Service Body gave the teams fast side access to gear without climbing in, enabled integrated electrics for radios, charging, and additional batteries, and consistent layouts across all three vehicles so that every team member knew exactly where everything was, regardless of which ute they jumped into.
"We saw that Utemaster was the one for us. They had exactly what we were wanting, and what the NZRTs were wanting, in order to respond to emergencies out in the field," says Alexis.
The Setup
On the passenger side, a split door opens out to double as a work platform, useful for coordinating incidents, working on a laptop, or making notes on the fly. Underbody toolboxes on both sides keep essential items within immediate reach. Steps along the side make it easy to access gear stored on the roof rack, including their raft.
At the back, a full door opens to a full-length drawer running the width of the tray. A full-length roadside safety door swings wide enough to allow forklift loading where needed, and stays clear of people passing by on site.
Work lights run inside and outside on all three doors. Emergency lighting wraps the entire vehicle.
Every vehicle across the three teams is set up the same way. That consistency is not a convenience, it is an operational requirement.

Ready Before the Call
Auckland Emergency Management's vehicles are not just transport. They are response platforms, and the standard they are built to reflects the responsibility the teams carry.
When they pull up, they are ready.
This is the kind of setup that emergency service teams across New Zealand and Australia are moving towards - purpose-built, consistently configured, and ready before the call comes in. Whether coordinating flood response in Auckland or Queensland, bushfires in Victoria or Canterbury - the operational demands are the same. Your gear needs to be accessible the moment you arrive on scene.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a service body fitout for emergency response vehicles?
A service body fitout replaces a standard ute canopy with a purpose-built storage and access system. For emergency response, this means side-opening doors for fast gear access, integrated electrics for radios and lighting, underbody toolboxes, and consistent layouts across a fleet - so any team member can operate any vehicle immediately on arrival.
Why did Auckland Emergency Management choose Utemaster?
Auckland Emergency Management chose the Utemaster TrailCore because it solved a specific operational problem: with standard fibreglass canopies, reaching gear at the back of the tray required unpacking everything else first. The TrailCore's side-access doors, consistent layout across all three response vehicles, and integrated electrics gave their teams immediate access to critical equipment the moment they arrived on scene.
Can a Utemaster service body be fitted with emergency lighting?
Yes. The Utemaster TrailCore service body supports integrated emergency lighting across all three door panels, internal and external work lights, and underbody toolboxes that keep critical equipment within immediate reach. Auckland Emergency Management's emergency lighting was installed by Wade Group, specialists in emergency vehicle electrical fitouts.
Is the Utemaster TrailCore available for fleet orders?
Yes. Utemaster works with fleet buyers and emergency management organisations to build consistent setups across multiple vehicles. Contact the Utemaster fleet sales team to discuss your requirements and get a fleet quote.
What ute models is the Utemaster TrailCore compatible with?
The Utemaster TrailCore Tray and Full-Time Canopy is available for a range of popular dual-cab utes including Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-MAX, Mitsubishi Triton, and others. Use the Utemaster Ute Builder to confirm compatibility for your specific model and year.
IT'S YOUR TURN TO BUILD WHAT MATTERS
Getting your fleet setup right is not just about storage. It is about arriving prepared, every single time.
As Alexis and Logan know, the right service body setup means every team member knows exactly where everything is, gear stays protected in tough conditions, and when you pull up on scene, you are already ready.
