Customer Story - Off The Wall Construction
Posted on 25 February 2026 by Utemaster
A Utemaster customer who knows what matters.
Off The Wall rely on purpose-built construction ute fitouts to keep their crew equipped and productive on site. With Utemaster storage solutions tailored for concrete and trade work, their fleet is designed to handle heavy equipment, tight deadlines and demanding job sites.
On a busy construction site, when the right vehicle arrives, work begins immediately. No delays. No missing gear. No lost momentum. For Matt and Sian, founders of Off the Wall Construction, that is not accidental. It is the result of deliberate thinking, constant refinement, and inefficiency not accepted as normal.
Seeing an Opportunity and Taking It
Off the Wall Construction began by backing themselves when an opportunity appeared.
“We initially actually started in timber, just landscape retaining” Matt explains.
That changed when a large concrete wall project came up in Mount Maunganui, one that bigger Auckland companies were not interested in taking on.
“That was really the start of concrete construction off the wall.”
From there, growth followed through capability and doing the job right.
Momentum on Site Matters
As the business grew, so did the scale and complexity of its projects. With that came challenges that directly affected momentum on site.
“We had major issues like guys would get to site and then have to shoot across town because something was forgotten or they couldn’t fit it on their wagon or they just didn’t have it.”
Each missing item meant crews leaving site, breaking focus, and slowing the job. At the same time, significant value was being carried in each wagon, meaning security also became critical. Any loss of gear risked further disruption and lost time.
“There’s a lot of money in those wagons.”
“So we just went straight to the drawing board, as usual, with the normal military style and said these wagons have to be built that they have every single thing they need so when they’re on site there’s nothing that’s required.”
Rather than work around the problem, Off the Wall set out to remove it entirely.
Designing a Better Way to Work
To solve the issue properly, Matt looked closely at how standard construction setups were actually being used.
“How that standardised concrete construction from a builder and a lay team, how their wagons, how their setups were going.”
That search for a better solution led him to Utemaster, and instead of a generic setup, the process became hands on and collaborative.
“I gave them a call and they just said we’ll come down to Tauranga with two wagons, you bring your two wagons and let’s start playing around.”
The design process focused on real world use, not assumptions.
“They looked at our lay wagons, they looked at our construction wagons, they listened to all the gripes on our foremans on why they can’t fit certain things on the wagon.”
From there, the solution was designed and refined.
“They went away, they did a computer draw up for us and sent it back and said would this work, which was kind of personalising our lay wagons to a wagon they’d never built before.”
The result was a setup tailored specifically to how Off the Wall crews operate on site.
A System That Works on Site
The impact was immediate and measurable.
“It works so efficiently now that that kind of thing is a thing of the past for us. The guys have got everything they need.”
“It saves on the runaround and having to go backwards and forwards to our trades all the time and just means that they don’t lose momentum on site.”
Crews arrive ready to work, with everything they need on board.
Security was also addressed as part of the system.
“The security of Utemasters were a biggie for our insurance company.”
“They wanted the ability for our foremans or our workers to be able to just press one button to lock the ute and it locks up everything.”
For Matt and Sian, that meant peace of mind as well as productivity.
Always Looking for a Better Way
Off the Wall Construction’s approach is shaped by experience, mindset, and its people.
“I had a background in deep sea diving, which we had done a lot of concrete walls underwater.”
After years of hearing the same explanations, Matt’s response stayed the same.
“I’d heard so many times from people before, this is how we’ve done it for 30 years, this is how we’ve done it for 50 years.”
“There’s got to be a better way.”
It is a way of thinking shared with Utemaster, listening closely, collaborating properly, and designing solutions around real world use rather than off the shelf answers.
That same focus extends to people.
“The attraction to come to work for us is because we are really people focused.”
“We are focused on upskilling and training and developing them,” Sian explained.
For Off the Wall, success is not just measured in completed pours, but in the capability and confidence their people carry forward.
