NZ Police Fleet: Five Service Body Builds

Five service body builds. Five different units within the New Zealand Police. Each one engineered from the ground up around what that team actually needs on scene.

Serious Crash Unit. Forensics. Scene of Crime. Crime Scene Photography. All built right here in New Zealand by Utemaster.

Watch the NZ Police fleet builds video below.

Build 1: Serious Crash Unit, Extra Cab

The only extra cab in the fleet. This one attends serious road crashes, so the fitout is built around lighting, power, and rapid access to long gear.

A large underbody drawer with a suspended floating shelf handles tripods and extended lighting rigs. A 100Ah slimline lithium battery and 1100W inverter keep everything charged on scene. Every door is fitted with red and white lighting for scene illumination, and a PIR sensor tied to the vehicle alarm secures the fitout when unattended.

Build 2: Forensics and Scene of Crime

Built for fingerprints, photography, and site inspection. The Mule-Tek electrical panel hides a 100Ah slimline lithium and 1100W inverter cleanly behind the front wall, keeping the interior working space clear.

A 270-degree awning covers the work area outside. Split doors on the left side open to internal shelving, and a workbench gives the team a proper surface on scene. Full-time rear view camera, work lamps, and emergency beacons round out the exterior.

Build 3: Serious Crash Unit, Palmerston North

The first marked vehicle in the fleet, based out of Palmerston North. This one carries recovery gear, warning signs, cones, and first aid equipment, so the fitout prioritises accessible, organised storage over anything else.

Half-depth shelving with a removable floor and a full-depth underbody drawer cover long items and bulky gear. An underbody toolbox on the driver's side keeps winches, strops, and recovery equipment out of the interior. Same 100Ah lithium and 1100W inverter setup, with custom red and white door lighting on all three doors.

Build 4: Crime Scene Photography

Camera gear is expensive and needs to be charged and ready. This build steps up to a 200Ah slimline lithium and 1600W inverter, with the electrical panel spanning the full width of the front wall to handle the load.

A 3.5-tonne GVM upgrade increases payload capacity for the extra equipment. Rear infill panels and an integrated rooftop platform give the exterior a clean, purpose-built look. Basic internal shelving on the driver's side keeps gear accessible without overcomplicating the layout.

Build 5: Serious Crash Unit, Max Storage

When storage is the priority, this is the layout. A 900mm shelving unit on the side, a 1200mm shelving unit with an add-on for extra capacity at the front, and a full-depth drawer unit in the rear. Cones, signs, and all the gear needed at a serious crash scene, locked away and ready to go.

A 100Ah lithium and 1600W inverter handle the power side, all mounted cleanly to the Mule-Tek electrical panel.

Bandit-Proof Locking

Across all five vehicles, every fitout is secured with Bandit-Proof mechanical locking. When the vehicle is locked via key fob, the handle mechanically disengages from the assembly. No amount of prying will open it. Unlock it, and you're straight into the fitout.
